Ubuntu as a Java development platform

Hello folks,

I'm trying to set up a Java development platform on my PPC (iBook)
Ubuntu system (Warty). I need such a development environment for a set
of university projects regarding object oriented development.

I've read about IBM's JDK for PPC on the Debian WIKI
http://www.ubuntulinux.org/wiki/JavaPPC and am currently downloading the
latest RPM to install via alien on my system.

In the meantime I've also found an Ubuntu package called free-java-sdk
which seems to provide a complete free Java development environment --
exactly what I'm looking for and "free".

So before proceeding I would like to know if someone already tried out
free-java-sdk on PPC as a development environment and can tell me if
it's usable and stable.

I need at least a Java compiler and debugger, that's it so a free
software would of course be more welcome than it's commercial
alternative.

Thanks in advantage for feedback.
Regards,

 I.
