mailspool error running Mutt

As long as a user didn't receive a single mail since its creation,
/var/mail/$USERNAME won't exist. Sending the user a mail will automatically
create the spoolfile. This 'error' is harmless.

I don't think so: the mailspool files are (in my opinion) managed by the
MTA, not by the user creation tool.
