what's the problem you have with vim?  It's usually a low maintenance
application on Linux.

anyway, why don't you just keep it on disk if it is so much trouble to
remove it?  It's not like vim takes a huge amount of disk space and a
little command line editor can always be useful

$ ls -l /usr/bin/vim
-rwxr-xr-x    1 root     root      1393976 2004-10-07 17:44 /usr/bin/vim
