Gaim Encryption

Unfortunately, I claimed victory too soon. While the
Gaim+Gaim-Encryption package works, because it forced me to uninstall
ubuntu-desktop, if I want to install any other ubuntu packages,
synaptic forces me to reinstall ubuntu-desktop, which in turn forces me
to uninstall gaim-encryption (which synaptic lists as 'broken').

So I'm back to square-one. Still no gaim-encryption with gaim. I tried
compiling  gaim-encryption from source but ran into errors with that as
well; and compiling gaim from source, well that's plain scary. 

Any help, please? Could anyone put together a gaim-encryption package
for ubuntu? I would do it myself except that I lack the know-how. Thank
you in advance!!
