Un-nice behaviour from pan

Firstly, let me say that I installed Warty Warthog last week, and
am thoroughly impressed. I have completely switched over from
Mandrake 9.2. Now on to the problem...

I run pan at nice -n 19 so that it will decode in the background
and not disturb what I am doing. However, when pan is decoding binaries
it seems to override this nice level and suck up most of my CPU.
If I am playing a video at the time, for example, it will stutter
badly. This never happened with Mandrake 9.2.
