Have you tried uninstalling gaim and then installing the .deb you found? 
When you try to uninstall it, it will tell you that it's going to remove 
"ubuntu-desktop." Don't panic. That's just a meta-package that depends 
on everything that comes installed by default. Uninstalling it won't 
uninstall anything really.
