All,

I am a total Linus noob. As a developer with over 30 years experience
and a computer user from back to where 32k was a lot of storage, the
progression of technology continues to amaze me. I have been using
Windows since Windows 286/386 (before Windows 3.0) and am
self-sufficient in that environment. I, do however, want to expand my
universe and become conversant in Linux. I like the freedom and
openness of the OS and want to help make a difference here also. I want
to see Linux succeed and I want to help spread the word.

Currently, I find Linux both fascinating and frustrating at the same
time. Ubuntu has gone a long way to help, but I continue to be
frustrated by what I don't know how to do and what I don't know I need
to know (if that makes any sense).

I've learned a lot by watching and reading this list. The simple
suggestion by Oliver Grawert to use:

		sudo dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xfree86

to re-probe and reconfigure a new video card would have saved me a
reinstall if I had known about it before hand. As it is, I was able to
add a couple of resolution steps to what was detected as it is
(Hurray)!

All this rambling brings me to my questions:

1) Where is a good resource for learning Linux. I need both quick
"How To"s and some in-depth reference material.

2) I want to add a SCSI card and a SCSI 4MM tape drive to a already
configured system that doesn't have them now. Is there a re-probe
method that would detect and load the necessary drivers to allow me to
use that tape drive?

Thanks for listening.

Steve Bromley
