I wanted to interject that I have had two systems where the linux file
system would trash itself and in both cases it turned out to be bad
(or just not up-to-par) IDE cables. One was a PowerMac and one was an
old PC. Both had trouble running ext3 but I've decided that it's
merely because the system was getting used closer to its limits. On
the PC the problem did not exist for kernels 2.4.18 and earlier, but
trying to install any newer one was a disaster.
