I don't understand why you can't modify /etc/modules - if you don't the 
system is clearly broken, but assuming you're right, you _can_ emal root 
  providing instructions about what is needed.

And pray the system will work enough to be fixed. I have a vision here 
of the U root drive going missing.

I say _email_ root because there are often altogether too many messages 
flying by which the sysadmin needs to act on, and information displayed 
on the screen can be lost by any number of means over which the sysadmin 
has no control.
