No X Display with IBM T30 laptop

Hi,

I just installed ubuntu distribution (i386) on top of Vmware 4.5.2 on my IBM T30 laptop running Windows XP. After the linux installation and reboot, X window never comes. Three or four times screen flickers (goes on and off) probably trying to come up with different resolutions and finally fails and leaves me with usual text login prompt.

Is there any fix for this problem ?
