Ubuntu optimization - open items

This concerns Virtual PC/Mac, but you can probably help anyhow.  Read 
on. :)

My Virtual PC/Ubuntu setup is getting better, here's a summery of 
left-over open items. I hope you listers can help, will make a summary 
at <http://www.sci.fi/~abisoft/articles/tips3.html> once all is Good.

1. Kernel / boot issues
-----------------------

- is there a comprehensive list of boot options for Ubuntu ("apm=on 
acpi=off" and the like)?
- how hard would it be to compile a customized kernel just for VPC, 
anyone done that already?  problems?
- how to read clock always from hw CMOS (or at least, after resuming 
from sleep mode). Now Ubuntu loses time each time it has been 
suspended.

2. X11 / Desktop
----------------

- how can I disable the annoying 'virtual desktop' scrolling feature?
- how to make a modified .xmodmaprc be used by default?

3. Other
--------

- ALSA drivers seem okay, and no problems anywhere.  Except no sound is 
actually output, and the volume setup goes min if I try to move it.  
Where to debug this; VPC should emulate a SoundBlaster 16 compatible 
card.
