Ubuntu problem...

I bet you tried to run k3b under KDE as sudo.  But maybe not. 
Regardless, what has happened is that the .ICEauthority file under your
home directory is no longer owned by you.  To fix it, log in on the
command line (you can press ctrl-alt-F2 to get to a login prompt). 
Then issue the command "sudo chown userid .ICEauthority"  You might
also have to issue a  "sudo chgrp userid .ICEauthority" but I'm not
sure about that.  (in both cases substitute your user id for the userid
in the commands)

Anyway after resetting the owner back to yourself, type exit to logout
and hit ctral-alt-f7 to get back to your gdm login screen.  You should
be able to login to KDE now.
