As a reply to #2... check out /etc/X11/gdm/gdm.conf (or something like
that. I don't have a Ubuntu machine handy but the file is from other
Linux experience). It seems that that file already has an option for a
software-suspend command. I believe it's normally commented by default.
Try that out. I've tried it before but it didn't work for me.
