IM and blogs have become important communication tools in business. Needed,
despite the human engineering risk on IT infrastructure.

CD burner might be considered a liability by some, because it would allow

It's needed too. It's the closest thing we have to Photoshop, which many
consider an essential piece of software on any Windows desktop.
Other business applications I consider essential:
dia-gnome
Inkscape
gpdf
firestarter (many companies mandate personal firewalls, especially on laptops)
Lifrea (important source of info via RSS feeds)
Planner
glabels
gnotime
