XFree Broken For Good?

An apparent glitch in the HD created a fatal error in booting 2.6.9. I ran
fsck, and it found a lot to correct. After that I rebooted and got as far as
the GDM waiting circle. No XWindows.
No amount of fiddling with md5sum, or dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xfree86 could
straighten XWindows. I uninstalled, removed, purged xserver-xfree86, and then
downloaded and reinstalled. Nothing. I reset sources.list to only Warty, and
reinstalled xserver. Still broken, with a "sub-process Error 10" when I try
to reconfigure. Apparently all is well from the command line.
Is there a way to completely start over with xserver and GDM without
reinstalling Ubuntu? Or is the damage terminal? I am using the Libranet
partition for the moment.
