Help with sound please

kmixer? XMMS plays almost no matter what I set the sound output for
(esd, alsa, oss), so that's why I was discounting that. I find it
easier to use alsamixer from the shell prompt to spot channels that
may be muted. Type alsamixer and then move through the output channels
with the arrow keys looking for bars with an MM (muted) and unmute
them (press 'm', I think)  one at a time until your sound works. It's
messy, but works for me.
