Help with sound please

Hi, I've just installed Ubuntu 4.10 and it looks great. I'm pretty new
to linux.
I'm using an Acer Aspire 1680 Centrino laptop with intel corp |ICH4
845g/gl chipset AC'97 audio controller. The video is ati mobility radeon
9700/64mb
I installed XMMS but that won't work either.
However I DO get all system sounds which is good I suppose?
Any help will be appreciated
