real player performance problems (not ubuntu specific)

I listen to R4 for hours at a time using the RealAudio plugin in
Firefox. Is the player running separately or do you just see the
pop-up window on the BBC radio site? The only niggles I have is that
it is sometimes reluctant to start. I have to close the pop-up window
a couple of times before the sound actually starts.
