Yes, the fix Jon suggests *is* what you want.  Just trust us, we're
doctors.

Ok.  That's a lie in my case, but what Jon suggests is exactly what
fixed the problem you have after a crash on my system.  Window List is
the default applet that shows a minimised icon and application name when
you minimise a window of a running application.  (BTW it has some quite
cool preferences, which you set by right-click on the little
'notification area' handle at the end of it.)
