mail-notification leaks file handles when set up to poll gmail

I configured mail-notification to check gmail once every minute.  I
know, excessive, but still.. it leaks memory like crazy.  After a few
hours of use:

george at enigma:~ $ lsof | grep mail-not | wc -l
1115

The mail summary popup also reports:

user at gmail.com: unable to transfer data: SSL handshake failed
