Install base system failure

Hi,
  My attempt to install Ubuntu (warty-install-i386.iso 4.10 downloaded
today) failed in the 'install base system' step during
'update available packages'
'unable to install the selected kernel'
  'kernel package: linux-386'

/var/log/messages says:
linux-386
  depends linux-image-386 (not installable)
  depends linux-restricted-modules-386 (not beeing installed)

The system specs are:
  INTEL P4 
  Asus P4P800SE Intel i865PE, 800MHz, 4xDDR, SATA Raid, GBLAN, AGP8X
  ATI Radeon 9600
  160Gb S-ATA
  NEC ND-3500

Obviously there is some mismatch but which?
Can I fix it?
