How to assign a function/action to a mouse button (Turbo Mouse)

Hello all, I am trying to figure out how to assign 
tasks/keystrokes/files to specific buttons on my TurboMouse.

It has four (left-, right-, 3rd & 4th) + 1 (middle-click) regular
buttons, and six extra buttons, some of which seem to have been mapped
to the "normal" buttons.

So, my questions is, how do I get GNOME to assign functions to
particular mouse buttons? I have  no use for standard Linux 3rd & 4th
button functionality so I'd prefer to reassign them (to something like
ctrl pageup/down).
