thats not completely true, on upgrade to a new stable version this
dependencys change to remove obsolete software and install all the new
goodies that should be in the new desktop environment, so its essential
to install it again right before you upgrade. you can also (if you like
the effort) look on which packages the ubuntu-desktop metapackage in the
stable hoary depends (if its out then) and install all these
manually....
