USB headsets that are compatible with Ubuntu?

Had a moment of insanity there and forgot that Windows 2000 isn't a
very good USB platform (and it's my work notebook, so can't put Ubuntu
on it, unfortunately), so I went with an ordinary
headset-with-microphone that plugs into the sound card. That shoulod
work on Ubuntu and the Thinkpad.

However, I can't test the microphone with gnome-sound-recorder. The
app seems to record, but it then freezes on playblack. I have to force
quit it. Sounds play fine and I double-check the volume control to
make sure line-in and microphone aren't muted and have some volume.
Has anyone else seen this problem? Is there a better sound recorder in
universe that I can download?
