Not sure how to fix your underlying problem, but try
Ctrl-Alt-Backspace to kill X. If you are using Macs, I am not sure
what the equivalent is, but it should be something similar. If it
kicks you to a command line, try typing startx to restart X. You may
have to sudo it, I don't recall.
