Color depth, Toshiba

Upon installation, Ubuntu Warty set the color depth in the XF86Config-4 on my older Toshiba 660CDT at 24. This was the same as another 660CDT on which I run Debian Woody.
But on the Warty laptop, I have to change 24 to 16 to get a display without lines.
I am new to Ubuntu but fascinated by the distro. Visiting family, I am away from DSL, and it is difficult to send my entire XF86Config-4 or to conduct thorough Web searches for help.
Why will the depth on my other machine not work on Warty? Can I modline something to help? Any suggestions?
Thanks,
Ted Parks
