I'm sure it was Freudian ;-)
As for fixing the "hang" I've posted his dmesg output and syslogs to the
list got no response other than to see if the keyboard was still active. Not
sure how one would go about fixing this "hang" it does not appear to be
connected with a particular program or procedure, the machine may stay
stable and usable for several hours or hang within 5 minutes. Memory checks
out fine nothing special about the hardware. He had an older ATI video card
that we removed when the sound devices on the card appeared to create
problems.
If someone can offer a troubleshooting guide I'll be happy to point him to
it, but I can't think of where to start.
Meanwhile thanks for pointing me to fixmbr.

Uh-oh. Sounds like something's wrong there.
Why not try fix it?

Depends on how you got it to dual boot in the first place. If it's the
standard GRUB bootloader that comes with Ubuntu, it will probably be
installed in the Master Boot Record of the hard disk. You will have to
replace that with the Windows bootloader. If it is Windows 2000 or XP
this involves booting from the XP installation CD into "Recovery
Console", and using the command fixmbr.
After booting in Windows you can use the Windows tools (Disk Management)
to delete the no longer wanted Linux partitions. Or you download
SystemRescueCD which comes with QTParted, to have a nice graphical
partition manager à la Partition Magic: http://www.sysresccd.org/
