Ok, I've now fixed my problem, the wiki that I was following doesn;t
mention that you need to do mkinitrd - $image_name $kernel_version and
then add an initrd line to menu.lst. Even though the wiki uses
make-kpkg this doesn't seem to do initrd stuff for you (or I'm just
missing something at the moment) whereas other wikis that cover kernel
compiling use dpkg-buildpackage which seems to setup initrd
automagically.

I shall attempt to update the wiki that I followed later.
