Synaptic any better than Windows ?

Vince, before you get all disappointed, consider the option that maybe
it's something you're doing wrong :) In this case, there is a
difference in Synaptic between "Mark for Removal" and "Mark for
Complete Removal." If you're not planning on later
reinstalling/upgrading an app, you want the latter. That'll get rid of
any left-over stuff related to that program.
And, like Rodrigo said, for now you can get rid of the ones already
there through the residual config filter.
