CPU fan speed control ?

I was thinking of changing my motherboard for an Intel one, who can
control the CPU fan speed based on the CPU temperature, in a closed-loop
mode.
However, I just read in the manual (RTFM ;-) of my motherboard, s next
to the descrption of the CPU fan connectors, it clearly states that you
can regulate CPU fan speed over CPU temp, by using a a little program
supplied with the board. But obviously, as you would expect, said
program only runs under Windows.
But it proves that, although this functionality is NOT accessbiel via
the BIOS menus/UI, it IS implemented nonetheless, and accessible via
software.
So, does any one know of some sweet piece of code that could access the
BIOS to vary CPU fan speed ?
Or maybe is it simply accessible through some ACPI pseudo file
in /proc/acpi, that you would just 'write' to set the ACPI
value/parameter in the BIOS ?
Just a shot in the dark here..
Regards,
Vince
