I'm feeling a bit foolish about this. I used expect and autoexpect extensively
in my PhD research without ever noticing that autoexpect was a script, and
could be simply copied from one place to another. It just happened to be
in the searchpath by default on the distros (RedHat, mostly) that I was using.
I have a suggestion for the packagers: make it so. Where would I put this
comment to make it an official request for a feature?
