Neomagic MagicGraph 128ZV video card

Greetings all,

I am installing Ubuntu (4.10) on an ancient IBM ThinkPad 380ED. The
video card for this laptop identifies itself as a Neomagic MagicGraph
128ZV. During the install, Ubuntu identified the card, but it only
lists one screen resolution: 600x480. I know from previous OS installs
on this machine that it supports 800x600, and 1024x768 tool.

I've run and re-run dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xfree86, but with no
success. I have managed to set options in the xserver that prevented
the GUI from loading at all. I suppose my next option is to manually
(gah!) configure the XF86Config-4 file in the /etc/X11 directory.

I've never played around with xserver before, so I am in need of
hints/tips/gotchas.

Has anyone else had trouble with resolutions not being found during
Ubuntu installation? If so how did you correct them?

Has anyone else installed Ubuntu to a laptop using Neomagic video?

Thanks
mark
