This is probably *not* the best way to do things, but you could use
sudo to change the ownership of /var/www to make it belong to you.
(username:username). Then make a symbolic link to that directory and
put it in your home directory.
This might be an OK way of doing it, as my local Linux guru has never
yelled at me about it. :o)
