I don't know (Have been using ubuntu for 2 days only), but you can try
to see if there is a file config.gz in /proc (find /proc -name
config.gz). If it exists, it contains the config file that was used to
compile the kernel.

Ok, that should not be a problem....
Do you use a PalmOS device? Either way try opening a command line and
check if gpilot is running:
'ps aux |grep gpilot'.
If it is, kill it and try the transfer again
