I like to use a system rescue disc for backing up. It's a gentoo
distribution 2002.

I boot to the disk, mkdir and mount it, for a place to put my backup,
run partimage and 28 mins for 10gb and about 12 mins to backup / which
compresses to 2.6gb.

Restore is flawless and takes only a few minutes.

It's nice to boot to something, I think, to maintain my drives.

I use firestarter, as well, as a frontend to iptables. It's painless
and you'll get your "stealth" at all of the sites.

My OS is Warty, Ubuntu:
hda1-winnt, hda2-/, hda3-/home
hdb1-/mnt/ntfs, hdb2-/mnt/archive, hdb3-/swap

happy motoring
