compatibility HP Jornada handheld

The plot thickens. I tried reading 'man synce' again and  the command
'synce-serial-start' gave me:

$ sudo synce-serial-start
/usr/sbin/pppd: In file /etc/ppp/peers/synce-device: unrecognized
option '/dev/ttyUSB0'

/dev/ttyUSB0 being what I gave synce when I installed it. A quck look
in /dev and , yes, there's nothing in there that looks even remotely
like it has to do with USB

Any ideas?
