Another good choice is to use ROX (rox.sourceforge.net) with a WM of
your choice (e.g. IceWM or openbox). It's fast and highly configurable
and has some intelligent ideas (AppDir's for example).
The disadvantage of ROX is that it isn't in an ubuntu reposity. I
installed the precompiled rox-2.1.2.tgz
(http://prdownloads.sourceforge.net/rox/rox-linux-x86-2.1.2.tgz?download).
Download, extract and run install.sh from a shell.

For me XFCE never was a choice because of the Filemanager, otherwise
it's a nice DE.

It's your choice :-)

Rgds,
Daniel
