Upgrading Kernel

I'm looking at upgrading my Kernel from the 386 one to the K7 (Athlon
Chip). Do I just download the kernel image and header files and then
install them? I know grub picks up the new kernel on my next reboot
but will the new kernel affect my x setup. I am guess I will have to
re-install the nvidia modules again.
