Search broken

Sure, I've gotten used to using 'locate' from the terminal... but I miss
Search for files. Has anyone else noticed that this is broken or is it
just me? It broke a few days ago and hasn't come back. Is there a
package I should have installed that isn't (or can reinstall)?
 
When I click on Search for files from the Gnome menu I get the search
dialog and I can select the file but there is no way to choose the
starting path so as soon as I type in something to search for the 'Find'
(or whatever) button dims out.
