My first computer was a Sinclair ZX81 in 1982 or thereabouts, followed
shortly after by a ZX Spectrum 48k... this machine lasted a while; being
upgraded in various ways -- in its final incarnation, which got donated
to a charity, it had an external keyboard, a 3.5" disk drive, a
different version of BASIC that didn't have those horrible "keywords"
and was enhanced to do such breathtaking things as sprites (lol) and
probably various other things that I don't remember...
...eventually the Spectrum had its day, and was replaced by a BBC Micro
(32K)... I had been getting quite heavily involved in the BBS scene;
edited some pages on the BBC's "Prestel" viewdata service (Clubspot 810)
and wrote some Viewdata BBS software on the BBC Micro. Also got hold of
a wonderful little hardware synth for the BBC, which was great fun to
play with -- along with a pirated ROM (the BBC tended to have most
software on ROM) which ran in Sideways RAM and made it do loads of
things it was not meant to. I reckon the BBC micro days were the ones
when I was most productive on the programming side as a hobby; soon
after I started working as a professional programmer and took a bit of a
break from computers at home. This didn't stop me going through an
Amiga, and an Acorn Archimedes, tho.... neither really matched the BBC
Micro for sheer "quality of experience"; dunno if anybody else shares
these fond memories of that particular micro ?
About 1996 I got myself a PC at home again, and in 1998 got myself
online. Since then been generally playing with various technologies;
Linux, and hosting, in particular...
I am very happy with Ubuntu as well -- only real issue at the moment is
getting the scanner to work (see separate thread) -- anybody who can
point me in the right direction?
