My grandparents have just started using Ubuntu on their home PC (from
Mandrakelinux 10.0).
They are aged 75 and 70 respectively with no technical background
whatsoever. My grandfather is a retired truck driver and my grandmother
is a retired music teacher. Their VCR regularly flashes 12:00.
They didn't install Ubuntu, or any other operating system they have ever
used. But they have taken to Ubuntu like ducks to water. They have no
problems using Firefox and OpenOffice. And are very happy with the
simple Ubuntu desktop.
They are still using Webmail because they are scared of Evolution - bad
experiences with the version that came with Red Hat 8. They don't trust
it with their email. I will install Thunderbird for them tomorrow.
My grandmother has had difficulty installing her EPSON Stylus C43UX
printer, it apparently isn't listed - I will attend to this tomorrow.
Hopefully it is there.
There's two more seniors happily using Ubuntu. I am in the process of
updating a lot of Mandrake 8.2 "Senior Edition" PCs around town. I am
certain I will have quite a few more happy Ubuntu users online very
shortly.
