I gave my son his first computer when he was 3. It was Windwoes.
When he was 4 I started dual-booting it for him and taught him how to
get back and forth. He adored linux. In fact, he wanted to spend almost
all of his time playing games with linux. But his learning games were
all Winders, so I had to make it default to Windoze to keep the missus
happy.
Now he's almost 6 and has a Mac. But that's mom's fault. That's a lot
harder to set up and teach him how to switch. I managed to find some of
the games ported to OS X. But they aren't quite the same, and the ones
he really liked aren't available. Yet.
He probably won't count as an Ubuntu user soon because of the booting
deal. But by the time he's 7 I might be able to teach him how to do it,
set it all up for him and let him play with it all.
My goal is to have him able to hack into dad's computer by the time he's
10 (without it having too much security, since it's behind a solid
firewall anyway) and alter some filtering I have set up (not the pr0n or
fascist ones, but some of the more harmless ones) so that he's no longer
blocked by them.
