'X' emulating Monochome displays ?

All of a sudden, I miss my super old first PC, it had a small 9" screen,
monochrome green.

I wondered, is there any 'plug-in' or whatever way of getting the 'X'
server (is that how it's called ?) to convert the colors ito shades of
grey, green, gold or whatever, before outputting to the display ?

Would that be complicated for X to do ?
I understand that may give X some more work, but since my PC, despite
being 2+ year old, basically wastes all its CPU cycles all day long, it
should not hurt it if it works 6% of its time, instead of 5%.  Lazy
machine ! ;-)
