I ran Xine from a terminal the first time I tried it after
installation, didn't recall any errors at the time. So I tried again.
And got some very interesting results....
Using a retail DVD (the Bourne Identity), I opened a terminal,
unmounted the drive and started Xine. And got exactly what I should
have got - normal playback, including video.
I now have a bit more data, but I'm not at all sure what is causing the
problem. Doesn't sound as though anyone else has seen it anyway. What
happens is that when the DVD is placed in the drive, Ubuntu loads it as
though it was a data DVD. And the Nautilus browser starts. If I then
attempt to play it, I get no video. If I manually unmount the disk
before starting Xine, it works.
Totem doesn't work at all for me - if I attempt to use it, as soon as
it starts to play the disk, it is mounted again, and I end up with no
video. After which, X has to be restarted before I'll get video again.
:) I'd file a bug, only I'm not quite sure what to file it against -
the fact that a movie disk is mounted as though it was a data disk,
Totem for mounting it in the same way, the fact that from the GUI the
only option is to eject the disk, not unmount it, or Xfree, since it
looks as though there may be a problem with the Xfree Super Savage
driver.

I've downloaded it, but not installed it yet. Will try it soon. I must
admit, it was my favoured player under Slackware, so I'll probably use
it anyway. Be interesting to see if it reacts differently at all...
