Not true. There are a number of ways to get multiple apps playing
sound. artsd, esd (IIRC), and jack (http://jackit.sourceforge.net)
all may help you, depending on exactly what you want, and how you want
to do it.
Jack is probably the most...abstract...but then apps need to be
specifically written for it, or use OSS (or emulation under Alsa)
and jacklaunch. Then again, artsd can be plumbed into jack anyway...
