distorted ps, pdf - latex question

I found out that the fonts are not found and rendered as monospace courier,
when doing the dvi i get a lots of these:
"xdvi: Warning: Font map calls for cmbx10.pfb, but it was not found
(will try PK version instead)."

Sorry, I am rather new to ubuntu/debian/linux, and apt-get Univerese
doesn't have pdflatex/psfonts. Where do I begin.

I installed lots of tetx -- should'nt they be included?
