At the risk of splitting more hairs (and, damn are they getting to be
fine ;-)...
viri = plural of vir which is man (ergo, we get virile in the English language)
viruses = plural of virus
Using a Latin plural boils down to how, if the word existed in Latin,
it would've been turned into a plural and what the word's usage is in
English. Virus (modern sense) did not exist in Latin, thus English
pluralisation rules apply.
PS Virii = plural of virius (if it existed), also, the Romans managed
to have exceptions to the rule like nearly any other language. Genus
<> geni (genera), opus <> opi (opera)... if you really want to muck
things up, I propose we start using virera.
If you google for viri plural of vir you'll find more written on the
subject than you ever wanted to know.
Anyway, back to your regularly scheduled programming (PSS Hitchhiker's
guide to the galaxy is coming to a screen near you)
Eric.
