I can't see any hitting the lists;  although there as been some weird stuff
in my main mailbox from the gs1.ubuntuforums.org stuff.

Luckily, even if they were viruses, they wouldn't affect your Ubuntu
machine!  :-)

OpenPGP is a standard, "like HTML".

PGP is one (proprietary) program that talks this standard, "like IE".

GnuPG is one (GPL) program that talks this standard, "like Firefox".
