firewire scanner help

I've got an Epson Perfection 2450 Photo scanner. It uses USB or
firewire. I've been scanning with few problems other than the usual USB
hassles in Warty, and after 780 or so photos I'm ready for more speed.
I've plugged into firewire, and get this:
Dec 12 23:42:20 localhost kernel: scsi4 : SCSI emulation for IEEE-1394
SBP-2 Devices
Dec 12 23:42:21 localhost kernel: ieee1394: sbp2: Logged into SBP-2
device
Dec 12 23:42:21 localhost kernel: Vendor: EPSON Model: GT-9700
Rev: 1.03
Dec 12 23:42:21 localhost kernel: Type: Processor
ANSI SCSI revision: 06
Dec 12 23:42:22 localhost ieee1394.agent[13540]: sbp2: already
loaded
So, it looks like the firewire subsystem sees the scanner, but scanimage
-L and sane-find-scanner, and xsane, all find nothing.
Any suggestions appreciated.
