dpkg -L shows you the contents of the package.
I think you mean "dpkg -l packagename" which shows the installed
version.

"apt-cache show" can show you the installable versions of packages, as
long as you have the repositories in your /etc/apt/sources.list (do not
do this if you do not want to upgrade to hoary, unless know what you're
doing!)
